Fishing fleet blessed ahead of hoki season The sun may have been out but the wind was chilly, as thousands of people made their way down to the Sunderland Marine Pier to celebrate the annual Blessing of the Fleet ceremony on Sunday. The event, postponed from Saturday due to rain, followed on from fireworks held on Friday night to mark the beginning of the fishing season. Bishop Richard Elena, Reverend Jeff Cotton, Father David Gruschow and Archdeacon Andy Joseph led the blessing, with musical performances

provided by the Nelson Male Voice Choir, the Nelson Brass Band and the Nelson Christian Academy Choir. Chairperson of the Blessing of the Fleet, Mike Smith, says the turnout was better than he expected. He says about 26 per cent of Nelson’s working population are somehow involved in the fishing industry. “I think people are starting to come to realise how much the fishing industry means to Nelson, which they haven’t done for donkey’s years. The

service is so poignant which is why people keep coming back.” Sue Sweeney, whose husband died at sea three years ago, tossed a bouquet into the water before a minutes silence was held, broken by eight bell tolls. “She was very, very emotional. I just hope it was a wee bit of a closure for her,” Mike says. With the increased hoki quota and low dollar, Mike says the fishing season is looking positive. For video on this story, visit

The demolition of the northern end of the Trafalgar Centre, as part of a $13 million upgrade of the city’s premier spectator venue, has been recommended to Nelson City Council. At a meeting in the council chambers on Thursday, councillors heard a report presented by council project manager Richard Kirby, which recommended the demolition and then rebuild of the northern end of the centre, including the Victory Room, foyer and toilets. The centre was closed in December 2013 after the council – which owns the building – deemed it a major risk to life in the event of a big earthquake. Richard says the report showed the current building was “brittle” in the event of an earthquake, but that liquefaction would not be a major issue. The recommended option from the report would see $12.956 million spent on the centre, which would include the demolition and rebuild of the northern end, strengthening work on the western edge

House Fire on Tasman St: Firefighters booted down the door of a Tasman St home last Tuesday morning after a fan heater caught fire in the bedroom area of the house. Three fire trucks attended the blaze at the house, owned by The Prince Albert Backpackers and Bar owner Naiane Denardin, at around 8am. Senior Station Officer Craig Davies says the crew used a high pressure hose to contain the fire inside the small house very quickly. Dolphins visit Nelson: Four small dolphins were photographed happily swimming in Nelson Haven off Tahunanui beach on Friday morning. Nelson man Chris Ratcliffe says he was in an inflatable boat with two young children that morning when he came across the dolphins. “I thought I saw some the other day but this time we definitely did. I had my phone with me so was able to get a few photos.” He says the boat was borrowed off a mate and the two six year-olds were thrilled to see the dolphins play. “They were pretty happy, they loved it.”

Fire breaks out in block of flats: Four fire crews were called to a block of flats in Churchill Ave in Richmond at Fire at Churchill Ave around 5.45 flat on Friday night. on Friday night. Contaminated slipway to be cleaned up Port Nelson’s Calwell Slip site has been contaminated by chemicals used in boat maintenance since the 1970s, but new funding, announced by the government on Saturday, will allow for plans to be made to deal with the chemicals. Environment Minister Nick Smith says the government will provide $200,000 worth of funding to the Port Company as part of a partnership with them and the Nelson City Council. “Nelson has an incredibly rich history of boat maintenance and we want to maintain that.” He says, although the chemicals found in the slip are not harmful to public health, he is worried about contamination spreading further into the harbour. The chemicals that will be cleaned up are both copper and TPP [Tributyltin]. Tributyltin was used as a surface coating to reduce the growth of weed and other organisms on ship hulls and was

Port Nelson CEO Martin Byrne says the port are matching the government’s funding and actual decontamination work will most likely begin during the 2016 and 2017 financial year. The Calwell Slipway has been in operation since 1970 and is the third largest slipway in New Zealand. It is now managed so that all contaminated material from ship maintenance is collected, avoiding further contamination.

A Nelson woman has made the finals of the World of WearableArts awards for the first time after two previous knock backs, and says her success is a “long time coming”. Claire Bywater is just one of seven designers from the Nelson region to be selected to appear on stage in this year’s show, which is now in its 28th year. Of the 128 garments selected to take part in the awards show, half are from international designers. Claire, 51, and her creation “Dreams of McQueen,” has been six years in the making, and is inspired by the late fashion designer, Alexander McQueen. “The idea has been in my head since I fell in love with paper mache. I thought it would be fun to combine hard materials with fabric for a crazy take on the red carpet fashion world,” says Claire. “Alexander McQueen used really unexpected materials in his avant garde work and had groundbreaking ideas. “I can’t think how many hours

in total have gone into this and I probably don’t want to. It becomes something of an obsession and the families of the WOW entrants should probably have their own support group.” Claire, who has previously taught at the Design and Arts College of New Zealand, says that she first heard about WOW while taking art classes in Christchurch, and she first entered back in 1999 with no success. She tried again in 2012 and her creation had some positive feedback, but ultimately still wasn’t selected. “After a shift to Nelson and some time off from teaching, there was something I had to do - have one more go at getting into WOW.” Claire says she is feeling relieved to have finally been selected. “When the email arrived, I was home alone and in total disbelief as I’d readied myself for bad news. I had to read it over and again and then phoned my husband, children and friends, by which time it was sinking in,” she says. “I cannot wait to go to Wellington with my family and celebrate being part of the show.”

“It’s fantastic, and to come in with Habitat for Humanity is a perfect fit. As we progress and get on our feet we’ll really help each other out. We’ll have to do it up, but if we can’t do up our own shed, what sort of men are we?” The shed is slightly smaller than the Richmond shed but does have a sizeable yard and some of that is under cover. Graeme thinks it will take around six months for the walls to be lined, roof fixed and power fitted. At that stage the shed will be secure and open to accept donated tools. Rob Silcock says they were happy to offer the space, because like Menzshed, they’re “beggars”. “The way I look at it is that we’re two beggars and we’re helping each other out. They’ve got a huge task to get that shed up and running, it’s not a gimme by any means. But it’s somewhere where they can go with parking, yard space, and once they get it fixed it will be a roof over their heads and lockable.” Graeme says the group will be hosting its AGM at Lambretta’s Café on July 26 at 4pm. He encourages anyone interested to come along.

The men finally have their shed – but they’ll have to prove their worth with the building needing plenty of work before it will be ready to house their tools. Menzshed Whakau has been searching for a suitable community shed where woodworkers, metalworkers and handymen can create together. The year-long search ended this month when Habitat for Humanity offered a shed at the back of their new Re-Store on Quarantine Rd, which is due to open in early September. The Richmond-based Menzshed Waimea has been running for four years and has been a huge success, with many retired men coming down to make the most of the tools and space and being able to pass on their knowledge to younger members. Its chairman, Philip Chapman, is also a committee member of the Nelson version and he says it does take time to get established. “It took four or five of us sitting around for a year and a half hoping, and all of a sudden a shed is there and we had 150 members.” He says 40 of those members are from Nelson and he believes many will be keen to get involved in the new shed. Menzshed Whakatu chairman Graeme O’Brien says they’re delighted to have been offered the space, but admitted it will take some work to get up to scratch.

Teddy charity hoping to comfort abused kids Andrew Board

A new charity is hoping to give Nelson’s abused children some small comfort, with a “Trauma Teddy”. Tedz Project started in the Bay of Plenty in 2012 but has since spread throughout the country, including Nelson. The project collects donated teddy bears, blankets, torches, colouring books and notepads, and puts them together in “snuggle packs”. They are then given to police to give to children going through the forensic examination process, which is where abused children need to give evidence about their abuse. Beth Hunter saw the charity online and contacted them to say she would like to help. That led to her setting up the Nelson

branch and attracting a group of ladies to help deliver the project. Last year in Nelson, there were 75 cases where children were interviewed by a forensic examiner. Beth says they’re after donations of a soft toy, torch, notebook and pen, colouring books and crayons and blankets. All donations must be new and will then be sorted by volunteers. “We’re relying on getting enough donations and then we’ll be able to have workshops where our volunteers will come together and put the packs together.” Beth says the first packs will be delivered next month. Drop off points are at Ecomoon, Elim Church and INP Medical Centre.

Ford Club to celebrate founder’s birthday

True-blue Nelsonians have a good excuse to take their pride and joys for a spin this Sunday, when the Nelson Classic Ford Club hold its annual cruise out to Rabbit Island to celebrate Henry Ford’s birthday. For Stoke’s Lorraine McKenzie it will be a family affair, with her son and daughter also owning Fords. Lorraine helped start the club back in 2002 with her kids. “An old guy advertised wanting a Cortina club but there weren’t enough in Nelson to get one going. At the time my son had a Cortina, my daughter had a Zephyr and I had a Mustang, so we thought, ‘why don’t we start a Ford club?’” Lorraine’s Mustang could also be the oldest

in the country. She says it was manufactured in March 1964 and the car was launched the following month. While the Mustang is her pride and joy, she admits it isn’t that nice to drive. “I’ve only been around Nelson in it because it is hard to drive, but I love it and I’ve always loved cars and loved Fords.” The founder of the Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford, was born on July 30, 1863, and every year the club invites all Ford owners to attend the birthday celebrations. Sunday’s event will be a good opportunity to inspect some of the best Fords in the Nelson region. Cars will need to be set up at Rabbit Island by 10 am, with the public viewing from about 11 am to 2.30 pm.

Beer and bites night

A tasting of boutique beer and food is being held at the Honest Lawyer this Wednesday night. Josh Scott of Moa Brewing Co will host the evening of gourmet nibbles, all expertly matched and complemented by a steady flow of the brewery’s award-winning craft beers. The Moa Beer’s Boutique Beer and Bites costs $30 and includes six beers, each matched with three nibbles. It starts at 6.30pm on July 22. Tickets at the Honest Lawyer.

When Donna Hippolite got married, her husband Sam was dying and the wedding had to be moved forward to beat his funeral. Two years on Sam’s still going strong and Donna decided to pass on her “lucky dress” to another bride – for free. She put her dress on the Facebook page “Pay it Forward Nelson” and said “it’s free for a budding bride.” She then chose from the people replying and earlier this month the dress was used for its second wedding. That same dress is now being passed on to a third bride and Donna says the positive response to it encouraged her to start a register of free wedding

Passion for geckos will live on in Brook Sanctuary Rex McDowall has left big shoes to fill at the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary and will be remembered for his infectious passion for geckos and skinks. The former co-ordinator of the lizard monitoring programme died last month, leaving behind the efforts he spearheaded years earlier. Sanctuary General Manager Hudson Dodd says Rex will be sorely missed by all the sanctuary team. “Rex was a stalwart volunteer of the sanctuary. He was a very level-headed and calm individual in the face of the exasperating task of finding lizards.” With a background as a private eye, Rex

also helped to install the security systems that protect the sanctuary. Two years ago, Jeff Bryant, a science teacher at Nayland College, spent six months at the Sanctuary alongside Rex attempting to monitor the highly-evasive Maitai Naultinus Stellatus green forest gecko after receiving a Royal Society Fellowship. Looking for one of the endemic geckos is like looking for a needle in a haystack. The Stellatus gecko is only just ‘hanging in’, waiting for protection at the Brook Sanctuary. It is hoped the numbers will increase with the possibility of establishing a future breeding programme for the species.

Waimarama Sanctuary has a map detailing the GPS sightings of the rare geckos, but is keeping it secret. During the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, a gang of poachers was travelling around New Zealand in a camper van with a list of GPS points detailing where rare lizards and geckos had been sighted. The Brook was on their list. In 2012, a German reptile poacher was jailed for trying to smuggle rare native geckos out of New Zealand. All New Zealand lizards are protected by law. They must not be kept or captured without a permit issued by the Department of Conservation

Traffic to be diverted from Atawhai Drive State highway traffic along Atawhai Drive will be diverted onto Atawhai Crescent, to allow for the trenching and laying of pipes across from the new Corder Park wastewater pump station site. The road will be closed on two occasions overnight to allow for the continued upgrade works. The detour will be in place on the nights of Wednesday, July 22 and Monday, August 10 from 7pm-6am with a temporary speed reduction of 30kph will be in place in the area. To ensure minimal disturbance to the adjacent residential properties, no heavy vehicle engine braking will be permitted. Electronic Variable Message Signboards will be located along Atawhai Drive north and south of the work site, prior to, and during the detour operation.

"All the young guys know about them and what they did for the club," Trael says. "It was very humbling and inspirational having them in the sheds with us - you just wanted to go out and play for them. "I think the old guys enjoyed it too, just being around rugby again and being in there with the players. They looked pretty happy about it." Trael says former players often presented jerseys to the Waimea College First XV when he was playing for the team and he thought it would be a good motivational idea for Wanderers - and he was right. "I saw an article [in Waimea Weekly] about the 1955 Wanderers team and me and my brother [Wanderers fullback Jessie Pitman] thought it would be good if we could get them along. We asked Fraze [team manager Frazer Lochhead] if it was possible to get them together and he did the rest." Frazer says Trael's motivational masterpiece gave their team a massive boost. Taylors Contracting Wanderers had been beaten finalists in the last two division one finals, but this year it was a case of third time lucky as they secured the Nelson Bays crown on Saturday to go with the Tasman Trophy they won last month. Although Wanderers have developed into a more mature, battle-hardened unit over the last three years, captain Trael Joss says they were fortunate to have a secret weapon for this year's final. Five members of the club's first and, until this year, last champion-winning team handed out the jerseys to the players before Saturday's final and Trael says their presence proved to be inspirational.

Seals, Tahuna, Thistle and Bogans wrap up titles Andrew Board They must be among the strangest names in football, but the Seals, Thistle and the Bogans have all won their respective football leagues, along with the more appropriately named Tahuna FC. Suburbs Seals were the main talking point of a busy Saturday afternoon for Nelson Bays Football. The defending division two champions stepped up into the top tier this year and remarkably won it in their first attempt. Stacked full of former Mainland League players, the Seals deserved the title, although it may have left a few red faces among the grade's more established teams. In the second division, Tahuna FC claimed the title several weeks ago, after challenges from FC Nelson Locomotive and Motueka faded late in the season. In a congested third division, Richmond Thistle sneaked ahead of clubmates the Hornbills, FC Nelson and Tahuna FC to claim the title. Thistle beat Tahuna FC, on Saturday to take top spot. There is no rhyme or reason some days what may work, it may be bait or artificial baits, jigs, slow jigs, softplastics, lures, flasher rigs, livebaits, dead-baits - the possibilities are many. Some days it is a certain colour that may be getting the most attention, style of jig, type of bait or fishing technique like slow jigging or very

lightly weighted rigs that may be the winning combo. Everytime I fish I learn something new from that day or from others. Fishingwise, there is still some very good fish getting caught around the district, kingfish, snapper and bluecod being the most common. The fishing pressure from more and more boats in the same areas is starting to show with less fish being caught on those days, recently we witnessed 35-40 boats in the same spots, all with sounders pinging down, and, this proved to be a very slow days fishing for most. A combination of the sounders, motor noises from outboards and inboards, all resonating down to the depths. This is when it may be a chance to try a new area away from the masses and learn your own spots for future success. So next time you are out try something new or different, it may change your success and, even if not, it was worth a try. Enjoy the winter fishing all.

"The one great success of my time here is the increase of senior footballers. In 2008 only 23 senior teams, we now have 30. If you give people good competition for a long time you get good numbers." Cup games for the three top divisions start this Saturday, with the Masters starting the following week.

U17 netballers put in good performance at nationals Carol Cook Russell Curtains Nelson Under 17 representative team had a tough road to hoe when they left for their New Zealand Under 17 Tournament in Mt Maunganui without their inspirational captain Poppy Restieaux and their vice captain Taylor Kirker, who was to take over from Poppy. The girls had time to come to terms with Poppy’s loss, however Taylor’s withdrawal on account on injury was just a couple of days before departure. However, to the girls’ credit, they came together to make the most of their opportunities. Although their ultimate goal was to make the coveted top sixteen, their first task was a top two finish in pool play. Nelson made the perfect start with a convincing win over Hamilton City B 41-27 with Tali Uia leading the charge from goal shoot, while Natasha Bannister had a strong performance at goal keep. Nelson then lost to a strong Kapi Mana team 25-41, before bouncing back to beat the Harbourside Invitation side 33-12 and then Auckland 2, 43-15. Wanganui was the game which got away – it could have gone either way as the teams could not be separated at half-time. Wanganui were up by two at three-quarter time, however a few wee errors crept into Nelson’s play and they ended on the wrong side of the ledger 27-32. Nelson then stepped up again to beat Wairarapa 39-9 and Horowhenua 44-25. The play off for 25th against Rotorua could have gone either way. Nelson played well and coped better with their physical opposition and, although they had a three goal lead at half-time, Rotorua chipped away at the deficit and finally record a 29-24 win. Coach Mandy Whiting had high praise for her players, saying “they were a really, wonderful bunch who had great attitudes”.
